Keramische onderdelen zijn zeer goed geschikt binnen lagers, om belastingen te dragen bij gecombineerde draaiende en lineaire bewegingen onder extreme omstandigheden.
Keramiek is zeer hard, heeft een hoge mechanische sterkte, kan slijtage perfect weerstaan en heeft een lage wrijving, allemaal noodzakelijk bij het positioneren.
Om nauwkeurig te kunnen positioneren in vacuüm - zoals bij toepassingen met extreem ultraviolet licht (EUV) - zijn chemisch bestendige keramische materialen nodig met hoge zuiverheid die niet uitgassen.
