It is very well possible to make gear wheels out of ceramic materials. Because ceramics can withstand compression loads very well, it may be desirable to change the tooth profile and thus make a gear wheel more suitable for manufacture out of ceramics. Especially in applications where chemical resistance plays a major role and high strength plays a minor role, a ceramic gear wheel can improve the service life under chemically heavy conditions considerably. We have manufactured ceramic gear wheels up to grade 8 in accuracy.
